Should have a little lip maybe. If not a screwdriver hammered through it will allow you to pop it right out! I usually just put them in with a hammer...but PCV pipe appropriately sized could work too.
I've used a small cold chisel and crushed the OD of the seal, then hooked them out. Got to be careful to not chop up the ID of the pump. Later model GM trans (700R-4 and 200-4R), GM put a thin bead of Loctite around the seal. But those had problems with blowing the seals out until someone went in a drilled the drainback holes a bit bigger.
Thank God it doesn't (shouldn't) have any on this '73 TH400.
My final 2 cents. I use a chisel (old handleless screwdriver) and crush the outer diameter towards the pump stator then pop the seal out. Wipe the housing out with brake cleaner and put weather strip adhesive around the perimeter of the seal. Then using a small hammer I tap the seal in radially. Without a failure, I've installed literally hundreds of seals and never used Vaseline to help retain the springs but I see no harm in it. The pump bolt washers can be reused 90% of the time. They have some kind of black sealing material bonded to them and usually they remain in good condition.
Thank God it doesn't (shouldn't) have any on this '73 TH400.
Thanks Tim.

Even with the Locktite around the seal, they are not hard to get out. When I build a trans I always check the drainback and put a thin ring of Locktite around the OD- never had one come out when I didn't want it to.
