Default '73 restoreation problems Help!?!?!?!?

me and a buddy of mine went out and cleaned her up and changed the plug wires and dist. cap. checked the fluids, and the brakes (so we could get it to moves by pushing) and everything went great untill i went to jump it. the key in the ignition is stuck halfway between on and off (can't get the key out, and when we hooked it up to jump start the old butt battery we saw a huge cloud of white smoke comming from under the hood????? what are we doing wrong??? the smoke was comming from the passenger side between the firewall and the tire-well. ANY ideas would be helpful. TIA

Put it in reverse, there is a lock out that makes you out it in rev before taking the key out. It also locks the trans in rev so no one can shift it.

This is assuming you have a 4 speed

the white smoke sounds like you've burnt through a fusible link in the starter wiring circuit. Break out the trusty wiring schematic and start tracing.... Good luck.
