Default Oil temp sending unit

Started troubleshooting my oil temp system, gauge always sits on cold. Found the wire just dangling on the driver side under the good, grounded it and the gauge pegged to hot so all that works. Went to plug it into the sending unit and can't find it. Is it supposed to be where that big, only hand tightened, oversized bolt is above the oil filter?

Yes that is where the sending unit should be.

Not oil temp sending unit, oil pressure maybe. I would think oil temp would be in the pan somewhere so it could be immersed in the oil. The oil pressure port would be the allen head plug just above the filter.

Correct!

The 81-82 oil temp sending unit is located above the oil filter as shown in the picture above ^ where the bolt is by GM.

When I installed the 81-82 oil temp gauge in my 78 where the useless clock was housed in 1985!!!!!, I researched where GM installed the oil temp sending unit for the 81-82's.

Prior to the oil temp gauge being used in 81/82, GM used the hole over the oil filter for the oil pressure sending unit which is where the oil pressure sending unit was installed by the factory on my 78. When I did the oil temp install, I relocated the factory oil pressure sending unit to the hole on the top of the block behind the distributor which was used on other years for the oil pressure sending unit on the SBC V8's in other cars.

That bolt is NOT where the oil temp/pressure sender goes.

That bolt is in the hole for the non-Corvette clutch pivot (Corvettes use the hole further forward above the freeze plug for the clutch pivot). The hole to the oil gallery is the lower allen head plug right above the filter.

Some good pics in this thread that show the correct pressure sending unit location (this is also where your temp sensor could go). Post #15.

Thanks for the info. So I can take that bolt out? Was worried since it was hand tight that it might leak, but if its just a pivot for other cars it shouldn't have any oil behind it?

Any idea why the allen screw looks like it came with the engine (same paint color)? It's an 81 and has the gauge and wires, so I have to assume there was a sending unit there at some point. Supposed to be all original (I know the oil pan in the pic isn't original, I replaced that).

Nope, that bolt in the hole is NOT for the clutch pivot..I just looked on my 4 speed and that hole is open on my 78 which is a 4 speed. The clutch pivot is further forward. The allen screw is where my 81/82 oil temp sending unit is on my 78 and where GM put the 81/82 oil temp sending unit when it came from the factory. The hole with the bolt in the picture above is open on my 78..................
