255-60R/15 BFG TAs, What's the Problem?
Mine arrived today. Nice tires and S-rated (112mph). Fine for my type of driving. I have read the recent posts on this tire size - lack of availability - and spoke with the Michelin rep at a tire seminar last week. (Michelin owns BFG.) She did not understand the concern....So I have mine for the spring. Did not have a camera at work but here they are at Tire Rack.

Well, one concern is that they may rub up front. In 79, 225/70 was standard and 255/60 was an option. When the factory fitted the 255 tires, they trimmed a little bit of the front fender to keep the tire from rubbing. I put 245 up front and they look close to rubbing, not sure if 255's would rub or not. Just what I heard.

I run 255/60's all around on my 78. The fender lips were ground away at the factory to prevent rubbing. You may have to do the same if tey are not already.

The subject was not really fit of the 255s. It was availability of that size. It does fit very well with no rubbing. But since the question was asked, here is the factory trim on the fenders to accommodate the 255s in 1979. The option was QBS-White Letter SBR Tires. They were GoodYears.

I bought the 245's because of reading a number of posts about rubbing in the front, but I agree with you, that those tires should be around for quite awhile that Michelin/BFG has no intention of phasing them out in the near future.

That tire seminar was very interesting. Much of it was straight-forward alignment wear problems/winter tire sales pitches (Arctic/Alpine) and the like but the Michelin rep kept mentioning MUG warranties. So in my ignorance I asked the obvious question. I suspect that I was not the only fool in the room. In any case, MUG is Michelin/UniRoyal/GoodRich. All one company and OEM suppliers to GM. I did not know that. We live and learn.

Just a further comment. I could probably get another year out of these tires, the tread is there. And I drive less than 2,000 miles each year. But those tires are 10 years old and the rubber is hard. They have lost grip. Noticed it last Sunday on a twisty road; things got a bit loose, too loose for me. Time to get the new. Just a tip: rubber does age.

Paul,
I didn't realize you were talking about availability. I'm not aware of any problems with getting the tires, it's just that the tire is not a great "performance" tire. It's tough to find a good performance tire for 15 inch rims, although from what I've heard, the Pirelli is a good choice. I'll be going to 17" wheels in the spring.

I used to run BFG's until I found out that other manufacturers can make round tires. Never had a set of BFG's run smooth.
You can get 15 inch tires and I'm running Perrelli (spelling?) 255/60 15's which have much more grip, but they are still not performance tires. To get the new perfromance technology tires you need to more up to 16 or 17 inch rims. I plan on a wheel and tire change next year.

I am running 255/60/15 all around on my 70 and haven`t had any rubbing problems yet. I don`t think I will have any either. Then again it has only been a cruiser so far.

I have BFG 245/60/15's front and 255/60/15's rear on my 69 T-Top. I had no problem getting the tires. I went with the smaller front tire to avoid any potential rubbing. (I had heard and read conflicting stories about the possibility of rubbing). I do have a handling problem on some highways and have been told it is because the wider tires get caught in the grooves of the road easier than the tires I replaced (225/70/15).

Thanks for that! I was sure it was a 255mm/15" availability problem. Must have been one of my senior moments ;) . In any case the S-rated tire is just fine for me. And I did get a very good price.

I sure hope BFG are still selling 295 50 15's series in a couple of years when I need my new set. :D

Just for the sake of interest, here is pic from last Sunday. This is a 1968 with 17" wheels. I will stay with 15" but it does look very nice!

I run TA's very hard and while they arn't the stickiest tires out there they do OK. I run 38PSI on the road course up here and the tread gets so hot it starts to melt
Out of round? Well a little but mostly from sliding them sideways across the track.
112 mph rated, Oops, I guess I should quit driving at 130 down the straights

So true...my 81 has 255/275 that sat out for about three years, I was told, so even with good tread, if I look close, I see all the cracks. Other side (north) is much better. time for new $$$$ :yesnod:
