I was looking at a 1980 Vette for sale today and was trying to figure out which engine it had. First of all, were all the three engine choices painted blue? (For some reason, I thought only 6 cyls were painted blue in 80s.)
It was an automatic equipped car, with a 135MPH speedo? (Which was weird, because I thought all 1980s were equipped w/ 85mph speedo.)
I didn't look at engine numbers because the seller was getting impatient. I was mostly worried that it was a California car w/ a 305.
$6K, but it really needed new paint. Interior good. Runs well. I offered him $2.800, hoping he'd come back with a much lower mid point. He came back with just a stunned look. I said "maybe I could go to $3K but no higher."
He said "I have to talk to my sister" (who co-owns the car) and said he'd call me back.
Sammy, all 1980 engines were blue. The L-82s had the aluminum silver painted intake with the black and finned valve covers. Corvette engines were blue from early '77-mid-'82. Yes, it should have a 85mph speedo, it's been changed. The fifth digit in the VIN on the driver'side pillar post denotes the original engine type. For 1980, it's "8" for 190hp L-48, "H" for the California 305ci engine, "6" for the L-82 engine.

Re: 1980 Model questions (sammyb)
1980 is a very good platform for any project you could come up with. It had the improved rear end housing, the 350"C" transmission with lock up converter, no computer controls, and really good looks with the integrated spoilers.
