Default GAs tank removal question.

My '74 has been asleep for over twenty five years, needs everything including a new tank or at least a tank flush and interior coating. I was hoping that the tank can be removed with the body still attached. Any help with procedure, tips on getting this done, or bad news that the body will have to come off of the chassis for access is really appreciated !

Thank you—

Hi TE,
The tank can come down with the body in place.
The spare tire tub needs to be removed.
The tank sits on a small tank support that runs from frame rail to frame rail and also on the frame's rear crossmember.
The small support is bolted in place and can be removed as part of the process.
The tank is held in place by 2 straps that run up over the tank from the rear crossmember to the support.
Dropping the mufflers makes it easier.
No too bad a job!
Regards,
Alan

The support bracket is to the left.

Strap at tank support.

Strap bolt at rear crossmember.

Thank you ! Looks like something that I could possibly accomplish. Would you know if there is a tank drain plug and where it's located?

Hi TE,
No, No drain.
Siphon the gas out through the filler neck is one way to proceed.
Careful working around the fumes… the fumes explode before the liquid does.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks ! Might wait until I can get a buddy to come by and help, seems like it would be best if two guys went up in flames rather than just one.

Be very careful with the fumes as Alan said. If you have a gas water heater in the garage, turn the gss and pilot light off. Knew a guy that had a jeep rear spring slip off a bottle jack and punch a hole in the tank. He was on a creeper and ended up getting blown out into the driveway. Almost lost the whole house.
Watch the fumes and vent the garage well!
