Does anyone know if it hurts anything to manually open or close the 1979 Corvette headlight assy. with engine off and just push up or down to open or close them gently ?

It doesn't hurt to open/close them manually but this has to be done from underneath by pushing on the mechanism if you try to pull them open/push closed from above you will damage things for sure.

Hi m,
Welcome!
First post!!

Here's a photo showing where to push and pull to open and close the headlights by hand.

Reach up from below.
Grab that rod that extends side to side, not the little plastic switch. (It's fragile and easy to break.)
Regards,
Alan

On the rod:
Push up and to the rear to open the lights.
Pull forward and down to close the lights.
