I used the grease method, and attacked the problem from underneath the car with the car on a ramp/jackstand combo. How did they even take the photo in post #10? Is that a bare C2 chassis before the body drop?

It may be too late for the OP (or perhaps why he has to delay), but make sure you have both a fuel pump gasket and fuel pump plate gasket before you begin.
