OK, time for a dumb question....when I took my 69 apart there was a piece of angle iron (obviously not factory) under the radiator, not touching it, attached by the two mounts, on each side, in the picture.
I can't imagine the radiator needs this support and quite frankly it doesn't directly support the radiator anyway. What are these for? Should the radiator need some support in addition to the two brackets?
My speculation is that that piece is covering up or was used to repair rust through holes.
Agreed. Looks like someone used that extra pc to reinforce a rotting lower support. In reality I believe it should be the lower pc that you see exposed, along with a seal/cushion that adheres to the top of it, between the supports. If you remove that extra angle, the bottom rail of the support may be rotted and may fold up. New supports (complete frames) are available, though.
yes that top piece has been added , looks like as stated to try to give the piece some extra life . That rust is in a tricky spot to get at for sure . The new pieces are expensive but way less hassle than a repair . Decision time for you !
OK, so I dug into the area behind the right mount...the left was solid. I found a soft spot on the corner of the support....I cut it out and repaired the area with new metal. Nice and solid now.
