How to fix loud Side exhaust
Hi Gents,
I am the proud new owner of a 1971 Corvette 350. Unfortunately, I quickly learned that the side pipes it has are to loud for me. They appear to be a reproduction version of the original 1969 corvette side Exhaust system (N14). Behind the heat shield they seem to have a chambered muffler.
Is there anything I can do to quite them down? I am OK to sacrifice performance. Is there a baffle I can install? Perhaps add a small inline muffler? If so which one to consider? All ideas welcomed.
Picture of exhaust attached.

Hi A,
After looking carefully at your first photo it appears you have the typical 69 style side exhaust pipe/muffler.
It's a single muffler about 40" long and in the shape of an '8' in cross section.
I don't know of any way of quieting this configuration of pipe.
They are LOUD!
Regards,
Alan

I've heard a few cars with the sidepipes and they are loud, but I didn't think they were objectionable. Its possible your sidepipes may be rusted out to the point that they don't have much baffling any more. I had a midyear with that problem. You might just need new pipes.
Sweet ride by the way.

Check to make sure everything is tight and you have no exhaust leaks, Mine is better after fixing my leaks I have to be a block closer before my wife hears me.

Thanks. For amusement I was just mulling over some baffling/absorption options in the tube length, but I didn't have any idea of what diameter/cross sectional area availability there was.

I made my own 20" long glasspac type muffler- as from what I have read after 20" the noise reduction is minimal.
perfed SS metal- insinkerator (SS steel) garbage disposal rings hold it together-
Used V-bands to clamp together- and can change out insert if I don't get enough noise reduction

wow, all great feedback! I took down the side pipes to take a closer look. the pipes look fresh and proper. I guess they are just too loud for my taste. I just placed an order from corvette america for stock rear exhaust system. Probably going to sell the "1969" exhaust system (noticed in the catalog they are very expensive!). If any one is interested in them, send me your best offer via message.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Not sure how effective these are, but I plan to give them a try on my Hooker MaxFlows inserted in the collector before the muffler extension. They are typically used on boat headers. Won't work with your application though.

Have you tried this yet? Was looking at these last weekend at the Summit store in Reno NV while looking for a glasspack alternative...

I have these installed in hooker side pipe header collectors. No difference in sound that I could tell. 385ci. 11.5:1 compression.
