Default Remove center cap

Hi guys

I am changing tires on my aluminum rims. I need to get the center cap off to fit the wheel in the balancing machine but they won't budge. I hit them from inside with the back of a hammer but nothing happens. Searched the forum but couldn't find anything.

Help please!

Cheers
Fredrik

I think you need to tap them in from the outside.

Your center caps have probably been installed with clear RTV on them to help keep them from coming off. Place the handle of a large hammer against the inside then clobber the hammer with your palm. My center caps were so loose I feared i would lose them so I resorted to using clear RTV to keep them on but the RTV does make it more difficult to remove them.

They actually rattle a little bit so they are not glued. I should just bang on them from the inside?

"Clobber" and "bang" might be extreme, but you will have to pop them out from the back.

Seems reasonable since hitting from inside seems pointless. I will check in one hour when I get home from work.

What I then don't understand is how I could lose one center cap during a ride a couple of years ago.

Oh, now I got it! If I had looked close enough I would have seen three small allen screws holding the cap in place.

Unscrew - pops right out.

These caps do not install from the inside. I just had my brother change my tires this summer and we removed them with a combination of hitting them on the side on outer side of wheel and hitting from inside as described above. They 100% install on the outside of the wheel.

You can see the clips here and how they would clip on from the outside.

No problem! Those you linked to are plastic after market replacement ones. I have a set of those, which I will use instead and save my three remaining stock metal ones.

What years were they metal. My '77 originals are plastic.
I wonder if I could drill & tap them and add set screws.

They're aftermarket.

My car is '75 but I'm not sure the wheels are because the flags look different (1980?).

Mine? Flimsy plastic is original?
