Default Distributor Hold Down Clamps???

So I just ordered a Vortec-style SBC Cam Sync Distributor for my EFI conversion; it says it comes with a "fixed" hold down and I may want a traditional hold down clamp arrangement for easy signal adjustment....

What the heck is it talking about? Can I take the traditional hold down clamp off of my current large cap HEI and put it on this thing???

The description says for easy cam signal adjustment, consider using a traditional style hold down clamp. So, just use the hold down clamp that's attached to your manifold with a bolt. No need to buy anything extra.

For what this is worth:

I can understand the confusion in what they wrote...seems to sometimes be typical on how some instructions are written poorly and not make sense.

But as for the forked clamp that will hold the distributor. I know that I HATE the cheap chrome plated aftermarket ones. They never seem to really lock the distributor down and hold it. So I always prefer to use GM one.

I use ordinary muriatic acid (swimming pool acid) to strip chrome plating off. It only takes about 30 minutes if the part is submerged and then I reuse the acid for other things.

I know exactly what you speak of. I kept loosing the distributor timing I set. I finally used a lock washer from a spare header bolt kit in addition to the flat washer. So far, so good. I forget to mention though that I also used a stud rather than the bolt. But, I imagine the lock washer would work with the bolt.

The L31 style Vortec distributor (like the one you purchased) has flats on the housing that the supplied clamp rides on so that you can just drop it in on a typical L31 style installation (with a 12200411 PCM). Theoretically, the cam and crank sensors will be at least close enough in sync to fire the engine provided you have the dist gear clocked correctly when you drop it in.

You can remove this clamp and use your original HEI clamp if you need adjustment room-
Which is what I ended up doing.

I had the same experience. The PO for my big block had installed just about every chrome-plated part available except the hold down clamp for the distributor. I bought one and it would not hold the distributor in place, so it is in my junk parts pile and the stock clamp is back in place, working properly.
