Can anyone tell me where I can purchase a kit for runout shims for the rear rotors?
I have new rotors to put on in the spring, and would like to have the shims on hand (assuming I will need them), so i can do the job all in one day without having to measure, then order, then wait...
First you will need to clean, deburr, and clean the mating surfaces. You can buy expensive rotor shims if you like but have a shim kit and punch die that I have used for many many years. Some good old fashioned hardware stores or industrial suppliers will have shim stock sheets in various sizes and is all you will need.
Summit Racing. They sell shims that are .003 and .006 inches so you'll probably want to measure the runout before you order. These are the disk type that goes over the wheel studs. There are different types of shim stock if you don't want to use the type that they sell at Summit.
That is exactly what I recently did after GTR1999 recommended making shims. I found brass sheets at Hobby Lobby and used some of my wife's aluminum pans or you can pick some up at the grocery store. You will need to measure the run out first and then make the shims. Easily cut with scissors and you can make the center holes with a drill. Clamp the shim between two pieces of wood, this will keep the shims from distorting and allow you to drill a perfect hole. Some of the run out may only require a piece of aluminum foil or try to clean up the rotor and hub a little more.
