Default %&*#$&^ Headlight Assemblies

I keep seeing everyone with these nicely refinished headlamp assemblies (support brackets, etc) all fully assembled out of the car.

I need to do this to mine but for the life of me cannot see how the heck you get them out of the front end in one piece?

I have removed the 5 bolts that attach the headlight support bracket to the car but do not seem to have enough room to drop it out and down.

I should add the the bumpers, hood, and grilles are off of the car so I have complete access to them.

What gives?

When I put my headlight assemblies in my 68 I went in through the gap just ahead of the radiator. As I recall the radiator was out at the time.

My radiator and trans cooler are still in place. Perhaps that is the issue.

When I took mine out I think I also removed the center/front horseshoe brace that went to the bumper, that allowed me to pivot them out easier (didn't really know how they went together or I would have separated them when I took it out)

When I reinstalled, I put the headlight assembly in separately from the bracket that attaches to the car.

Link if it helps

Oh, my pictures of everything together outside of the car was just that, pictures, the support brackets came back off when I re-installed, not sure you could do it together with the rad cradle in place...

You can install and remove the assemblies with the radiator in as well as the horse shoe bracket. It does take a little massaging but like mine have been going in and out with the car like shown below:

YOU CAN DO IT!!

Hi PS,
I'll mention 3 things:

Are you removing the headlight light actuator while the door and mechanism are still in the car? It's 4 nuts for the actuator and then the pin that goes through the clevis on the actuator rod.

Also, removing the 'up' adjustment arm while the mechanism is still in the car helps too. It's 2 bolts on the outer side of each mechanism.

Then removing the headlights and headlight cups while the door/mechanism is still in the car helps too.

These things really help reduce the 'bulk' of the mechanism.

Carefully protect the painted edges of the door and the openings in the surround.

It's NOT easy or quick!

Regards,
Alan

Thanks gang. I did a bunch of searching but either pictures were missing or it was not as concise. This is perfect and should allow me to get these buggers out.

I will try removing the actuators which should give me enough clearance.
