Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Stevo81)
Just do it. Don't trailer unless broke down and unfixable.
When they asked adults about their favorite childhood activity, "camping" was the answer. Why?
Because they overcame obstacles as a group. So go...see...overcome !!!
Take roadside tools, cell phone, duct tape, AAA card.
Anybody gutsy or crazy enough to drive around in a 30 year old plastic car is crazy enough to go for it !!! Rah ! Rah Rah! Go, Fight, Win !!! :troll

GET IT IN AND DRIVE THAT BABY HOME!!!
I just got my Red 1970 Convertible- Flew into Philly to pick it up, spent about an hour checking it out and drove it about 750 miles the next two days back to South Bend, Indiana in July--- It was a BLAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had a radiator hose spring a leak- Stopped at Autozone- Back on the road in about 1/2 hour!!!!
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (jwitvette77)
So you have the voice of reason telling you to trailer the car home.....
And the voice of adventure telling you to drive it home.....
Here is the voice of paranoia and suspicion asking.... What if he tells you he is driving it 100 miles to Birmingham but he really tows it there and dumps it on you?? I AM JUST KIDDING!!!!!! :)
Personally I would probably trailer it because I am a conservative wimp, but it sounds like a fun adventure to drive it home. If you do drive it home, try to get a real early start and hopefully nice weather. Being stuck on the side of the highway is real different on a sunny morning vs a rainy night!!! MJ
Almost forgot: I had my car delivered to my home on a flatbed (170 miles , paid $2/mile, but he did all the driving, I stayed home).
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (MNJack)
I used trailer to get mine home even though the previous owner told me that he would drive it cross country. The car only has 28,000 original miles but I was concerned that I did not know the car. After getting it home and now that I know the car, he was not lying. I could have driven it home the 150 miles… It would be your call on if the condition of the car would hold up. If you never saw the car or drove it or just don’t feel right about it, I would trailer it home!!
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Rick Church)
Rick,
If it were me, I'd make plans to take delivery myself and leave the seller completely out of it. You can rent a trailer or have it delivered by someone who does this professionally.
If you're concerned about a 31 year old Corvette running...on the other hand.....mine is 33 years old and runs great. I could get in it now and drive to Tenn. without any hesitation or worry.
You can also pay him to deliver it to your door. Offer him what you think would be a fair price and I'll bet he'll do it. I'd include the cost of getting the car to you and the cost of getting him back home.
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Rick Church)
Go with trailer to his house and drive it back. If there is a problem, get it on trailer; bring winch or come-a-long just in case. End the saga.
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Rick Church)
Rick, I'm gettin' worried about you!!! By now I would have rented a Ryder truck and one of their drive-on trailers, and would have gotten my butt down there to pick that baby up! (And no, I'm not wealthy.)
Personally, when I've made a purchase like this, I couldn't wait more than 24 hours to get that puppy in MY doghouse! :yesnod:
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (OHSIXX)
Rick,
Drive it home!!!! I went through the same worrying when I bought my 70
back in May. I finally decided to drive it home (225 miles) and I had a ball doing it. I went early in the morning on a weekday and had a friend back home on standby in case I had to call him on my cell to come get me!!! Had no problems, would do it again in a minute! I felt like a little kid again!!!!
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Bill 70Coupe)
Rick,
I flew up to Detroit from Florida with a guy to buy a 69 big block. We checked out the car at a local dealership's mechanic bay area and he bought the car. We then drove it back to Florida 1300 miles. The only problem we had was a blown fuse for the interior lights. I say go get the car and have fun!
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (BB wowbagger)
You should drive it home, theres nothing that beats the feeling fo DRIVING your new car home, instead of trailing it home..Drive it like you stole it..
I've owned my car since March, I bought it from a fellow C.F. memeber-"Eric 96", who now resides primarily in the C4 section ;). He lives in New Orleans, I live in Santa Barbara California. How was that problem fixed? Two plane tickets for me and my buddy. approx 2000 miles of open road. Three days. ...Texas desert with the top down doing a good solid 90-100, few truckers, fewer cars, for miles on end, and sometimes just slow-cruising it checking out the sites - one of the best experiences of my life.
I say go for it man!!! :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash:

Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Rick Church)
So seller's willing to drive it 100 miles for you ... or to California. If he wants the sale, have him drive (not trailer) it to your city (about 320 m?) and you provide him with a return plane ticket home. Arrange for sale to occur two weeks out so you get a better deal on ticket. If he can't deliver on time you cash in ticket and get a different car. For the price of a plane ticket you'd know the car made the trip ... without hassle with trailering-costs & logistics. If you haven't paid already, you could pass on this one too.

Hey Rick, Maybe you didn't get my e-mail. But as I said, if you need a co-driver or whatever I'm availiable 24/7. Let's use your pick-up and rent a u-haul carrier and let's go get it. I'm only 30 miles from ya. Terry
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Rick Church)
Well Rick, consider me lucky, trusting, or a good judge of character. However you slice it, the previous owner of my 72 told me the car would make the trip from Long island NY to Illinois. (850mi) I believed him... and sure enough, my new baby and me got well acquainted with no problems all the way home. I guess it's all up to your judgment of him. If he's a stand up guy and has presented the vehicle properly, I would drive it home. I'll never forget all those people waving and beeping at me throughout the whole trip. A group of classic cars also encouraged me to join their caravan Sunday morning as they drove to a show on the interstate. Good luck with your new Baby.
Eddie
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Rick Church)
Rick, send the guy the check for the car if you haven't already; if you have then disregard this step. In either case, I owuld just sit home, sip a beer, relax and read my Corvette Fever magazine and let my buddy, Bill, go get the car for you.
Signed,
Your buddy, Bill
Will you just go get the car! :) :jester
