Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Rick Church)
You should drive it home, theres nothing that beats the feeling fo DRIVING your new car home, instead of trailing it home..Drive it like you stole it..

Bite the bullet. Get yout buddy to drive the whole way there with the truck and trailer and bring it back. That basically takes the equation down to you and "billy".
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Rick Church)
If the seller is willing to drive the car 100 miles, should I just trust the condition of the car and meet him in B'ham and drive it on home instead of having a third player in the game? The seller says he wouldn't hesitate to drive it to California and back. Maybe I just answerd the question myself! I'm just a little paranoid about a 31 year old car breaking down in the middle on nowhere Alabama or Tennessee. 350 4 speed should run forever, I'm just concerned about cooling and stuff. I just want this car in my garage!!!!! :yesnod: :flag
Take the chance. What's the worst that can happen?? You could pay to have it transported, but proably not worth the expense. Take whatever tools you think you MIGHT need (coolant, ratchets, etc).
Oh wait!! How would you expect to get the 220 miles to BH? Can't very well drive two cars, now can you?? You still need someone to go with, unless you have some other way of getting there.
:D

Rick, drive the car home. Keep the cellphone handy and just go for it! I drove my '69 home after I bought it, about a 170 mile trip. It was in really poor shape, bad tires and brakes, etc. I loved every minute of the drive (except for when the fan belt broke!). If the current owner can make it 100 miles to meet you, you'll have no problem driving it the rest of the way home.
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (BB wowbagger)
300 miles ain't that far. I'd get AAA platnum coverage (tow up to 100 miles), and then go get that puppy and motor on home. Take it easy, get to know the car, stop a few times and check the oil & listen for tapping or hissing (in case the temp gauge isn't accurate or it's leaking a lot of oil. You ought to be fine.

I bought my 85 in arizona, I live in oregon, 1500 miles. I took the cell phone, and by the time I got home I knew every squeak, vibration, and I would not hesitate to do that again. However I bought the 78 in maryland, and the owner said he would not trust it, so I had it transported. If the owner seems like a honest guy,,,,,,,,GO FOR IT. :seeya
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Rick Church)
Pick a weekend when your buddy is not too too busy, drive to the seller's and pick up the car. Then drive it all the way back yourself. :) Thats what I would do. Bring a cell phone to call your buddy in case you break down so he can come get you. Then he may or may not be bothered at all. ;)

Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Rick Church)
IMHO I would trailer it all the way. It's easy to say bring a cell but you'll be the one stuck in bum fu*k egypt trying to get a tow. I would never drive a 31 year old car in unknown condition all that way. Save yourself a lot of grief and have it trailered ( also saves on misc damage....a lot can happen in over 300 mi)
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (terryrudy)
I got my car through the internet. It was a trade but no matter... We met at a convienient half wy spot with the understanding that either one of us could back out if we felt there was a mis-representation involved. I drove my 69 Back to Florida (1000miles) The other party chose to trailer my carto his place. I had no problems other than a burnt out headlight in Nashville. It was actually a good trip albeit a little stressful due to a lot of rain and it was a busy weekend for traffic. I did take a bag of tools, extra fuses, flaslight, and everthing to do a tune up if needed. IF you take what you need Murphy's law says you won't need any of it. In my case Murphy was right. :D :D :)
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Rick Church)
I would drive all the way to the guys house (300 miles isn't that far for a purchase like this), load the car on the trailer, and then bring it home. You will have enough to think about without worrying about getting home. If I don't know the car, I don't drive it 300 miles.
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Flareside)
Here is how I did it in August.
I rented a car from Avis in Jacksonville and drove to Fort Walton Beach a distance of 360 miles. Dumped the rental at the local airport. Bought the 72 and drove it home 360 miles at 75 mph.
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (RUXperienced)
Well, as I see it, there's only one solution now....*sigh* you're going to have to rent that giant catapult.

I suppose it depends on how your lucks been going, if the seller can get it to go 100 miles I'd think the other 266 miles should be doable I've nursed some POS vehicles in excess of 300 miles to get home, other then the anxiety I've had no problems. Good Luck
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Rick Church)
When I bought mine in Ohio, I rented a Uhaul autotransport in MD , drove it there , picked up the car and pulled it home. Trailor was $100. Now this was a car that couldn't be driven that far (400 miles) with bad brakes ,so I didn't chance it.
Re: What would you do in this situation, advice please! (Rick Church)
Just do it. Don't trailer unless broke down and unfixable.
When they asked adults about their favorite childhood activity, "camping" was the answer. Why?
Because they overcame obstacles as a group. So go...see...overcome !!!
Take roadside tools, cell phone, duct tape, AAA card.
Anybody gutsy or crazy enough to drive around in a 30 year old plastic car is crazy enough to go for it !!! Rah ! Rah Rah! Go, Fight, Win !!! :troll
