Newbie question. I see in a lot of posts that people advance the timing from 6 to 8-12. Why? If higher is better did GM set it lower for emissions or why? What are the downsides of raising the timing?

Emissions. Upside: Runs better. Downside: Gotta set it back before smog insp.
to much timing can make it hard to start .and you can have pinging and knocking .to much knocking will give you reduced power. The knock sensor will reduce power.8-10 works best on my car.

So no issues with 8-10? When you say it works best, what exactly do you mean? Thanks
my car starts good ,performs good .no pinging or knock.go up 2 degrees each time and see how it runs.the gas that you are using can make a difference.factory calls for 87. my car likes a midgrade 89

You should be able to get away with 10*-11*, but if it starts pinging, back it off 1* at a time until it stops. I run 20* on my 383, but it likes that much.
