Can't you use a cheap bore scope and go in through the oil drain plug hole? (Just thought ot that 'cause I have a colonoscopy coming up soon).

First off that is definitely a 2 bolt just by looking at it and to tell if it is a 454 or a 427, a 454 crank will have a dowel pin on the crank for aligment of the flywheel/flexplate. A 4 bolt block will have those holes drilled out to 1/2" and 3/4"(I think) for external oil cooler lines for high performance applications.

And the plot thickens! 68ACADIAN's post really put a twist on my research and my photographic memory was messing with me. The comment about the dowell caught my attention, and no, the crank does not have a dowel pin! Furthermore, here's a photo of the flywheel (casting 3973456N). So this cobbled together engine isn't really a 454 at all. The heads (casting 353049) and block are definitely fitting for a 454 but not the crank. The exhaust manifolds (L/H casting 3880827) are for a 66-69 Corvette. So now I'm super curious, so the pan will come off to reveal the crank casting #. My naiveté is slowly lifting one experience at a time!

They can check to see how many bolts your mains are.

I pulled the pan. The verdict: 2-bolt mains (as most of us thought), the crank casting is 6223 which means it's a forged, 1053 steel crank. So this engine was cobbled together. Bottom line, it's a 427. I wonder what it's worth. It has the 1969 Corvette exhaust manifolds. Do the exhaust manifolds add any value?

Just did a quick Ebay search and apparently the 3880827 & 3880828 manifolds are indeed worth something

4 bolt blocks have a provision for a external oil cooler set up and the picture of your block shows it does not have that

3/8th or 7/16th rod bolts? And see if you can get a number off the pistons...

it doesn't mean it's cobbled together,it's a CE block could have been a warranty replacement.

I thought that if you had those 3 ports. Especially the one in the middle with the big square nut/plug it was 4 bolt main. I also got the pins on back of block as well.
Here is a pic of my LS7 Block 4 bolt, looks the same as the the pic pl2000n had in his first post.

Rod bolts are 3/8". I can't see any numbers on the piston underside. They're aluminum though.

The far left hole is a blind hole on mine, not tapped through like yours, so it's a 2-bolt. The big one in the middle is just for the oil pressure gauge. I don't know what the hole on the right is for. Anyway, I pulled the pan to verify, and also to get the crank casting number.

OK. I see. Yep, the far left hole on mine is the what I use for my oil pressure gauge. I got a mechanical Autometer.
