Default 1973 Auto shifter trim hitting heater control

Trying to reassemble the center console in my 1973 and the plastic trim that slides back and forth with the gear shift under the trim plate wants to hit the back of the heater control.

Any trick in getting it to slide under the heater control?

Also, is it normal for the front lower brace of the heater control to sit on top of the wiring harness that runs across the console near the front?

Got the car as a bit of a puzzle.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

That plastic has quite a curve on it and should be aimed to slip under the controller.
Sometimes people try to install the two sliders in the wrong order, the wider one goes on top while the narrow one goes underneath.

A picture of what you've got happening might help

I don't recall the heater control hitting any wires, if it's holding the front up though that would drop the rear down and possibly explain why your sliders are touching....

Not sure these will help, but here are some pics of what I'm talking about.

Looks pretty close to normal. Do you have the smaller slider strip? If it's not there it may let the larger strip droop down (even though it's in it's own slots) a little.
The thing barely clears the heater so every little bit matters

I can take a look tomorrow and see where the control is sitting vs those wires as well.

Like I said, every day is a puzzle with this car... a puzzle with missing pieces.

Not sure if it'll help your issue but you'll be wanting that other piece or crap will be falling into that slot forever.

The other thing is that the sliders don't go right up to the end of the slot in the metal plate, they stop about 1/4" or so short

(sorry, best picture I have at this time)

I do need to make sure I get the console moved far enough forward, but when it was hitting the heater controller it was hitting it with the shifter way back, not when it was in park.

Definitely something not sitting right and it's a cluster-f$#k in that area if anything isn't quite right.

I've got mine off so I can see if I can get some better pictures of how everything in there should sit for you tomorrow

Thanks for your help, almost have it back together now. Still having trouble getting it far enough forward, but getting closer.

Frequently the center gauge cluster/dash pad has sagged down and that will push the shifter console back.
Check the fit of your parking brake console and that will help gauge where the shift console is sitting fore/aft

Great advice.

Possibly my last question...
The center console has 2 holes in the front, the trim panel screws into the top hole I believe, does the bottom hole screw into the bracket in the support on the tunnel? I have the assembly manual and it's not terribly clear. It shows a rivet holding the support bracket inside the center console, but doesn't look like the screw holding the trim piece on would go through both into the bracket on the tunnel.

Yes, I believe you are reading it correctly

The screw in the lower hole of the tin bracket / console holds the main console to the bracket on the tunnel and then the side filler panel screw goes through the upper hole in the console and into the tin bracket and has nothing to do with the part on the tunnel

The console should be solid without the filler panels installed

Remember that some of these holes were drilled on assembly so they might be on weird angles or not perfectly centered etc.
