I have an LT-1 with the stock solid state ignition. With the vacuum advance connected the timing becomes erratic at higher RPMs. Meaning the mark jumps around under the light. It doesn't do it with the vacuum disconnected. I'd like to put a points type distributor in but with a Pertronix module and coil. Is this easy meaning will the standard distributor drop right in? Is it unwise? if so, why?
The car seems to run all right though. I just replaced a 600 CFM carb with a 750 CFM. While checking the timing, we noticed this condition.
You certainly have an issue with your vacuum advance/plate/linkage/shimming/something.
A stock unit will certainly fit, and is just fine.
Pertronix? It's good/bad/so so , depending on who you talk to.
The trick, no matter what you use, is to have it set up and curved properly.

No need to rev your motor unloaded above 3000rpm and it's bad for it to do so. Your maximum advance should be all in by 3000rpm. Hard to say what the spark scatter is from but is it dropping power at high RPM >3000? Missing? Backfires?
For a drop in distributor with a 1wire hook up a HEI will do it but you most likely want to use the small cap HEI with the coil separate from the cap. Somewhere near 100 bucks and if you spend $200 you didn't try to price shop.
