Default coolant additive.

Any one use a coolant additive to cut down on electrolysis issues? I picked up a bottle of NAPA rust/corrosion preventative which claims it prevents electolytic type corrosion. After I flush my system I was going to add this as extra protection. Not sure if its worth it though.

Coolant already has rust inhibitors in the formula. Save your money and change coolant as recommended on the label.

First, never use tap water, regardless if its city or well water it has minerals. Use only purified water, a buck for a gallon at the dollar store.

I don't know about rust control additives but as far as reducing coolant temps I poured in two bottles of Red Line Water Wetter. I swear by that stuff. It claims it removes air bubbles (cavitation) and allows the water to move throughout the block / heads more efficiently. I saw a reduction of 10-15 degrees immediately.

Actually you should run distilled water in the cooling system......down here I mix it 75/25 water to antifreeze. Up north...50/50.
Maybe that is what HeadsUP meant.....by purified. But drinking water in the bottle has minerals in it and can cause electrolysis........
I don't mess with additives unless there is a problem with keeping cool.

I only use that stuff in early non pressurized cars, like 38 Buick.

If electrolysis is an issue then add a grounding cable to the radiator and/or better/more grounding to the block.

Just read about this electrolysis thing recently. never really gave it much thought but figured since I'm flushing the system I' try to give it max protection. read about attaching an anode but not going to bother with that. And yes i have distilled water to use . When you flush obviously some non distilled water will still be in the system somewhere. Any ideas on how to remove that so its not mixed with the new distilled/coolant mixture?

Some of these fellas will tell you to open the block drainplugs. If they haven't been opened in 40 some yrs, I would not touch those drains with a ten foot pole.
Let sleeping dogs lye.

A little tap water won't hurt much. Un-hook the lower rad hose, drain, call it good.

A little bit won't hurt. I do use an anode. Just spin off the drain ****, and screw it in the same hole. Easy to pull out to drain.

Thanks, How long is the anode? will it fit in a 68' radiator?
