You should be able to control it and do paddle shifting using the stock ECM. I believe the 2014 trucks came with the L86 (LT1 like truck engine) and 6L80e so there is an OS for the ECM which supports the LT1/6L80e combination that could be used as a starting point. The trick might be figuring out how to make it paddle shift.

If you look in to the reasoning behind the OEM's using the 8 speed you will find its all about emissions control .

My Lexus is no torque or horse power monster but....it has an 8 speed transmission with 5 options for shifting....'Eco' 'Normal' 'Sport' 'Sport +' and 'Manual'

Its always in the sweet spot, in Eco mode it'll be in 6th gear by 30mph, in Sport + it'll hold gears much longer, shift much firmer and down shift much quicker.
