Consensus on axle snap ring
Hi!
Whats the consensus on the use of the axle snap rings? Ive seen people say theyre absolutely needed ( and a very scary video shown too!)
And others say they would never use Them and GM only used Them to prevent the axles from dropping out.
The previous owner was clearly in 2 minds as well, as he only fitted 1 ring. (No signs thrrr were 2 clips and 1 popped off)
Cheers

Can anyone provide any documented event of a side axle falling out of the differential while the car is in motion? I can visualise them falling out on the assembly line without the clip.

I don't think falling out is a possibility but 1/4 to 1/2 in and out movement is and that can allow the car to really move around.
GM put them there for a reason, unless you have added a top link I would not run without them.
There have been plenty of owners pull the rear end apart and the clips are laying in the bottom of the diff or completely gone with no issues.
Why take the chance if your in the diff adding the clips is not an issue,
I'm no expert on this so this is really just my thoughts,

I have c-clips in two cars and putting them in the third! The fourth still has snap rings! To prevent movement, I would never go without them!
