Default idle keeps changing

350, 700r4, alli heads, carb n dissy rebuilt by lars, and not touched since reinstalled.
just giving the vette a going over before a long 2700km (1680mile) cross country drive.

checked timing etc and set the idle speed to about 800, 600 in drive with the solenoid at the weekend just gone.
warmed up car yesterday and idle is way high, ie over 1000, readjust back down.
start car this morning and idle is way low.....

what could be causing this wild swing change every day?
have checked all the hoses around the carb for leaks, checked linkages, brackets etc. nothing seems out of place.

don't want to have adjust every day......

Check for a vacuum leak ,or could be the fast idle linkage is sticking on the carb. With the engine off close the choke by hand and work the throttle than open the choke and work the throttle ,could even give the linkage a little spray of WD40.

check if the bolts holding the carb have loosened due to gasket compression, same with the screws holding the air horn onto the carb body.

check the chock pull off is working correctly. Check vacuum leak at distributer and headlights/wiper vacuum lines. You shouldnt have to change a setting. They usually dont just turn themselves. Most cases its a sticking choke, throttle line. Idle speed step up, vacuum leak. Something along those lines.

Reset your idle speed when its warm then, look for a vacuum leak with starter fluid or something that can get sucked into a leak and enrichen your fuel. Then when you start it a again when its cold look for something that is holding your throttle open.

Good luck

yes, 72's have a solenoid that presses against the throttle lever.
turn the key, it energizes and moves forward, you adjust idle speed by turning the end nut,
there is a small screw on side of carb that is used to stop the throttle blades closing too far.

all bolts tight, no leaks that i can find.

all checks and adjustments done when engine fully warmed up

ok,
unplug it and use the screw to adjust idle.

Use a can of hot start and spray around carb base and intake runners at the heads and other vac related items

If properly set up, the choke will raise the idle of a just-started engine until it warms up. You might just have a 'sticky choke' issue.
