Hi v,
The original tanks were made from galvanized steel.
It's pretty difficult to get a good appearance with an original tank because of the way the tanks rust.
There is a paint called Tank Tone (Eastwood) that gives the tank a nice appearance, but it's obvious that it's paint... not plating or galvanizing.
Regards,
Alan
Hi 79,
I actually like the look too!
The only thing that bothered me is that the paint 'hides' the small 'heat zone' at the weld seam.
I never really figured out a satisfactory way to recreate that!?!
On many cars the Tank Tone is just fine.
Regards,
Alan
Thanks Alan 71. Got a can of Tank Tone and redid my tank with it after a thorough sanding. Also got stainless M6 button head screws to secure the pick up/sending unit to the tank. (very weird the smattering of Metric fasteners here and there on this car).
Had to put a new pick-up tube sock filter screen on, tested the fuel gauge sending unit for functionality, and cleaned the inside before putting it back together. A filler neck to body gasket and she's done. The mounting straps are powder coated semi gloss black. Will wait a bit to mount it to the frame.
