Going the steeriods route and need a pump. Is a stock one good enough (and which one is stock) or should I upgrade since I don't have one? I might add the hydroboast system later but the brakes are fine for me without additional power. I see Norval and Monty are fabricating systems but I do not have the skills to do it or the desire to farm it out so a direct fit one that works with stock brackets is what I am after. Any help is appreciated.
Re: Power steering pump, who has upgraded? (Fevre)
The hydroboost is almost bolt in, the only thing you mght have to do is drill some holes and relocate the studs/bolts and shorten the rod connecting to the pedal.
I replaced my ps pump witha KRC aluminium pump but only because the stock pump won't fit under the turno's and I needed one with a seperate tank.

Interesting timing. My pump has begun leaking heavily at its seals and the high pressure line. It is being replaced as I type with a stock one. Can't see much to be gained there, other than the hydroboost brake upgrade. Mine lasted for 20 years and 170K miles.

The after market Nascar style aluminum pumps are really lite and have an external resorvoir for increased fluid capacity and cooling. If you have a small block they make standard mounting brackets that can be spaced for proper alignment. They also put out I think 1160 psi instead of the standard 1000 so the power is a bit more.
I go through a power steering pump about every year or two. This was not cheap but looks trick and hopefully will last longer. I might also run a oil cooler in the line.

I'm setting mine up with a small cooler too. I too hope it will outlast the stock pump, would be kind of a shame to wreck the nice pump after 2 years (and let's not forget the $$$ involved, as you said those things aren't cheap)

I have just completed the installation of the Hydraboost on my 81 Vet. I could not be happier. If it were not for my 3 point seat belt I would have gone thru the windshield. All kidding aside, It truely increased the brake response and pedal feel.
In January I installed the Speed Direct rack & pinion. After the installation of the rack I used the stock 81 Saginaw pump. I was not satisfied with the look or the response of the old style pump. I changed to a GM pump, bracket, and serpintine belt systems off of a 89 Vet. I had much better response with the new GM pump because the pressure was made for the rack & pinion.
In working with Paul Clark from Hydraboost he was able to make the proper hose fittings to make the system a direct bolt in. He also sent me a braided hose and new fittings for the low pressure return to the remote reseviour for the power steering. I was using AN6 fittings before on the reseviour and so I had to purchase an AN 6 "T" fitting and hose ends to complete the installation.
Before I installed the Hydraboost I had already installed a 10,000 GVW cooler on the power steering system. I found that when I worked the steering system hard when I road raced and auto crossed that the power steering fluid would get so hot it would boil out of the reseviour. After installing the cooler I now can work the steering as hard as I want and the fluid never gets hotter than bath water. Also I changed to Red Line Synthetic Fluid. The cooler can be mounted on the round cross bar just in front of the AC condenser.
Note: Paul Clark from Hydaboost can be reached on the web (info@hydroboost.com) or phone at 586-531-2115. He was just the greated person to work with. He really knows his bussiness. And I have never found any one more customer service minded than him.
I just spoke to Paul this morning and He has just completed developing the Hydraboost for C4's. And is ready to market it. So if you have any friends who are interested in making their C4 stop on a dime and give 2 nickels change steer them to Paul. :chevy :) :) :flag
