Default Clutch/Tranny noise

OK,
This is a strange one but I will try to describe. I can be driving for a while and no noise. If I take a short trip on the highway all the sudden I start to here a sound like something is dragging under the car. If I stop and put the car in neutral, the noise goes away. The last time it did it, it souded like is was coming from the transmission area. Shifting is not effected and it doesnt seem to bother anything. When driving in short runs in the city it doesnt seem to do it. Only when the car is going for about 30 minutes. The noise sounds like tin scraping or a muffler draging...etc..
Any thoughts?

Check freeplay in clutch pedal. Maybe the release bearing is dragging and over heating.

Does it make the noise in all gears? At certain RPM?

Once the noise starts is stays in all gears until I stop and the car cools off completly. The funny thing is that the free play feels about right and the tranny shifts great... I would hate to drop the tranny to find nothing but it may be my only choice...
