Timing a friends BBC 496 Stroker

What would be a good number for total timing without Vac can connected? I've read as much as 40 for BBs. Should we start with 36 and go up till it pings?
I just want to set it and let initial fall where it may for right now.
BTW: It is set at zero initial atm for some reason. Guess how its running!

It really depends on the whole engine combo (compression, head material, cam specs etc) and how efficient it is.... I would NOT go over 36* though...
I run my 496 at 32-33* locked out, with a 4.5* of vac advance...
So 32* all the time, 36-37* at cruise with vacuum. No pinging with 10.0-1 compression, iron heads, 93 octane. I picked up knock on the dyno at 34*....
On all my other mild 454s I run 36* WOT and 10* vac advance....so 46* at cruise.
Depending on the curve in the distributor, you ideally want 15-16* initial at least, and then 36* all in by 3000...Then plug your vac advance in and limit its travel to give you a LITTLE more.
