check all of your vacuum lines? sounds like your car needs a tune up.
heres a starting point...after its warmed up the choke is no longer making the car richer.....try to figure out why its leaning out

With the short description of what is wrong..before anyone really gets into this. It would be wise to come back and tell us everything that you have or have NOT done to it.
Such as. If the car has been sitting for five years...and still has the old gas in it...no wonder why it is acting like it is.
So knowing as much as possible helps US help YOU.
This is a 1982 and there is no choke...it is fuel injected.

Also, if it's popping/backfiring are you setting a CEL (check engine light)? Does the light ever come on? If so, pull the codes and see what is going on. Like mentioned, we need more information what has happened to give you a better course of action.
