Follow up windsheild install question

Default Follow up windsheild install question

Ok I have located and drilled the holes for the clips on the top of the windsheild frame. The upper frame that I used came from a T-top car that I don't know the year of. I don't know why the holes were not already there. Here is my next question. hopefully it is not to stupid. Do the "clips" install on the inside of the frame channel or do the go on the windsheild side. Right now I have them screwed on the windsheild side, but when I put the top molding on I can't seem to attach the reval molding in the clips. I can't beleive that this job is being such a PITA. :cheers:

You have them in the correct place. I spent the afternoon doing essentially the same project - except that I only had to make 2 holes. The trick is to screw on the corner pieces and the center piece they way they will finally be. Then lay the reveal on (it will be tougher because you have the clips on already and its a real pita to pull it out of the clips) and get the side reveal moldings in place. Check it all out, and fix what doesn't sit correctly. You may have to (as I have) do a little grinding, tweaking, bending and tapping - be patient, it will make life SO much nicer. Make sure you have everything the way it should look when you are done. Then take it all off and do it for real. Make sure you correctly and firmly attach the corner pieces BEFORE you set the 'shield in - the screws for the windshield side are not accessable after the glass is in ( I've heard that you most certainly will crack the glass if you try to do it after).

The reveal doesn't go into the clips easily (after all, they SHOULD be tight). I used a very small thin screwdriver to just slightly start to open the clips and then push the tabs down in.

My buddy didn't show up tonight to help with the glass, so the REAL run will happen later. I'm really glad I did the dry run though, I would have been pissed to have to do what I did today under time constraints. I had to do quite a bit of tweaking.

I don't know if can help, but I have a picture right now - of my 75 coupe.
I can get some shots of the 70 header - but not 'til tomorrow.
You can see the approximate location (vertically) of the holes in the second picture.
I think Paul has the right idea - tweeking will be required.

Thanks for the replies guys. pws69 where did you purchase your windsheild? You are installing it yourself? Could you take pics of the proccess and post your steps. If this isn't to hard I may try and do this myself. I was origionaly going to just get everything ready and then call someone to put it in. :cheers:

A friend in the Auto Body business got it for me. ANY glass dealer can get one for you, the issue is that they expect to install the glass they sell. I'm not criticizing, that's what they do and they are entitled to make a reasonable profit - most of which comes from the install - so they aren't too thrilled to sell just the glass. I have replaced glass over the years in SIMPLER applications (Jeeps, foreign cars) so I'm not afraid of nor unaware of how to handle glass (two people and suction cups are the absolute best and safest). My friend HAS done a Corvette windshield or two and has access to suction cups so we are going to be just fine. Would I do it if he weren't available - sure - I have done tons of homework on the subject so I am aware of what to watch for. Could you do it? Don't know your skill set, but there is a fair amount to deal with - correct seal with the correct Urethane, placement, and one of the most important is the window depth in the frame. You need to be sure the depth ALL AROUND is correct. It is very easy (if you don't have correct spacers especially) for the glass to settle too deep especially at the top. When you put the reveal / molding back on, it will "stick out like a sore thumb". We will "dry fit" the glass and molding first and correct anything that needs it, take it apart, then do it for real. Did I mention that I tend to be a little ****....

Now I need to see if I can "put my money where my mouth is" and do it right! I probably should take some pics - I'll share them if I don't screw it up!!
