Some people would say this is the perfect scenerio: Not to put one more mile on the car and still have a speedometer. So, it becomes a work ethics or moral obligation to do the right thing or not. And now you know why on the cars title, there is a box to check if the mileage is not correct.
I only played with my Tripometer once, never again. Hasn't reset since. But it looks like in your case the speedo will have to come out of the dash. Something is out of whack and its not a fun job but do-able. (It a good time to swap out some of the dash bulbs too).

The odometer is driven by 3 plastic gears that I was unable to source when I discovered my odometer didn't work. So I got a rebuilt speedo from a vendor. I discovered that the rebuilts are a speedo from a different GM car (not original Corvette stuff) that have been modified. Can't really complain- it works perfectly.

When you pulled to "release" **** down to reset the odometer, it disengages the mechanism. It may just be "sticky" and didn't re-engage on its own. Try turning that **** a bit while pushing it UP (without much force). See if that fixes your problem.

my 68 will move the wheels if i push or pull, individually if i push and matching numbers if i pull. Hopefully yours just needs cleaning. try pushing
