Default new distributer for 72 vetee with a 454

Hello all, I am new this forum. I just bought a 1972 Corvette with a 454 and manual trans. a quick question for the people in the know, I bought a new aftermarket distributer for my car and forgot that it has a cable drive tach on it. the new one that I got does not have one. my original problem was no spark to one of the cylinders which I figured out what was wrong with the original distributer but like the electronic system in the one that I bought. do they make a aftermarket tach that will fit in the cluster so I can replace my gear driven one? also has anyone ever had a problem, removing their old distributers ? I have replaced a lot of them and this one refuses to pull out. I can get it up around 1/2 inch and that is all, I don't want to break anything.
thanks in advance for any help with this..

A 75 or 76 (maybe 77 not sure) tach will fit and is electronic (HEI distributors were in by then)
Face is a little different so that may bother you.
ZIP, Corvette central etc offer a kit to convert the existing mechanical tach to electronic using the existing face.

You can have your factory cable driven tach converted over to an electronic. I believe “Clocks By Roger” does the conversion.

I'm looking at doing similar with a 74 454. I believe what I have at present is a stock replacement.

What kind of ignition and tach would I have in there, currently? I see the later years were electronic, the earlier, mechanical. But what about 74?

I might add my tach currently has stopped working. I have yet to diagnose whether it's a cable or other component. So that needs to be fixed. What would be easiest when selecting an HEI which also fits with the Big Block?

Better keep an extra ignition module handy with that cheap china built $60 distributor if you buy it. Keep your original points distributor and have it rebuilt and recurved !

Wilcar, I'm not inclined to buy a cheap $60 version.

But my main question is what exists in my current '74 BBC setup? Did the 74 have anything electronic, or all mechanical (including tach?)

Mechanical TACH until the 75 HEI came along
Oil pressure went to electric in 74 IIRC
