The starter on my 73-454 is starting to act up. It makes some banging and clanging noises. I have to try two or more times before it will turn the engine over. I believe I need to replace it but since I always seem to buy junk parts that require several trips to the local parts store I was thinking of trying to fix it myself like back when I was a teenager. So my question is do you think I can get away with just replacing the solenoid or should I replace the whole starter unit? I appreciate your thoughts.
Once you disconnect power to the unit and drop it down out of there I think you will find a questionable Bendix. That can be replaced allow with a new soleniod while your at it.
A good solenoid is $40 at NAPA. Not sure on the bendix.
You can buy that whole starter rebuilt fir about 40 bucks.
Call auto parts store ask for 7.4 starter from anything new enough that they have it in stock. 96 suburban, 85 c30 truck, stuff like that. The solenoids are all different sizes so if you wanted to use your nose and field housing you would have to change solenoid piston-lever along with the solenoid itself. .

You can get a solenoid for $17 also. But you get what you pay for. Cheap discount parts are poor choice to use the second time around, the third time around, the . . . .
