If I'm right the Holley Systemax system consists of heads, cam, intake manifold and carb. Very similar to the Edelbrock system. This isn't a mod that will produce gobs of horsepower so your bottom end should be OK. If you are thinking about using nitrous in the future the answer is no. For that kind of punishment you will need forged pistons and a steel crank with good rods and rod bolts none of which came standard with an L 48. I installed SR Torquer heads and a Crane Cam on my L 48 and intend to install an Edelbrock manifold this winter. I don't think the increased horsepower is putting my engine in danger.
I think the systemax you are referring to is a cam, intake, carb, and possibly heads all matching from holley? Anyway, I think the stock bottom should be able to support 300 to 325Hp. My opinion anyway.
Sorry I should have mentioned what the kit consist of. It is cam, lifters, pushrods, timing set, heads, and intake. the people at Hot Rod Barn says it's guaranted to add 205 hp to a stock 350.
We've got guys here who are makin' over 400HP w/a stock bottom end 2-bolt main........... BTW: that must be one H of a Kit if it'll add that much HP........I've done everything except heads on mine and "only" gained 120 HP.........    !
Yes, an L48 lower in good condition will be fine with this combo.
Had a slug of a 79 camaro w/305 (305) 2bbl, seem to recall it was rated at 140hp ...dunno but similar 350 probably wasn't more than 175-180hp. So, 205 plus 180 = 385 ain't so hard to believe. All the cam & carb in the world won't getcha much if the heads can't flow it.
