I have a 78 PC with an L48. Pretty much stock. I would like to replace the muffler to give it a little better sound. It is a cruiser, so performance improvements are secondary. I am thinking about throwing these prefabbed Magnaflows on...
Thoughts? Also, what is the best way to remove the existing stock muffler? I removed the clamps, but I assume I will need to cut or grind the old one off? Would using a Dremel to "extend" the existing cutouts do the job? Or should I just cut it where the existing muffler drops down to 2 1/4" and beat the remaining ring off? :-)
I installed the same system on my 78 from Corvette Central. I think they are the same. They are not loud at all. I thought I would get a little rumble, but no. I used a cutoff tool to cut a couple more slits where the pipes were clamped. Just enough so I did not cut the underlying pipe and just wedged them off.
I have a 78 PC that has the engine modified and now puts out over 300 horsepower. I, too wanted to replace the stock mufflers and chose Thrush Rattlers. They are welded bullet style straight through mufflers and will give you the sound you are looking for. Check them out online. I'm very happy with mine and they are very affordable. You will have to cut the exhaust pipes with a dremel or similar tool and can either have them welded or use the right size clamps, which I did. I did the whole job in a morning using jack stands on the rear of the car.
ok, that was replacing the mufflers and a couple inches of pipe cutting a couple inches from the muffler, correct? Cuz then there are adapter sleeves he can use to attach the muffler to the orig pipe. Most auto parts stores.
Before I had side pipes, my Corvette had Flowmaster 50's on it. They had a deep exhaust note without being obnoxious and no drone. They are now on my Father-in-laws 1970 Charger and they still sound great.
Well, I did some more research and I think I am just going to bite the bullet and throw some true duals on. Anyone use one of the prefab dual exhaust kits?
I installed Allen's chambered dual exhaust. I like the sound and very easy to install. But I have a lift. You will probbly need four handstands. I would also put blocks under the wheels as I don' trust back stand completely. Google Allen' exhaust.
