The lighter is held in place by a retainer on the underside of the shifter console. You'll need to remove the shifter ****, then the four screws that hold the plate in place. Once you do this, flip the console over and you'll see the retainer.

From time to time this retainer can become stuck and hopefully yours won't be. If it is, just grab a big pair of channel locks and you can force it to pull through the shifter plage. However, know that if you do this you'll have to replace both the lighter housing and the retainer because you'll destroy them both in the process.

This will show you where the retainer is located.

This is the retainer.

Looking at this picture I have a question. I couldn't figure out where the ground wire off the shifter council wiring was suppose to be connected too. Are we suppose to connect it to the cigarette lighter housing like in your picture? The wiring harness I got from Lectic Limited didn't give me a "location" for grounding and it just wasn't obvious like other grounding wires on the all the harness in bought from them.
Thanks,

Hi z06roadkiller, this is a 4 year old post and, unfortunately, Ernie@Willcox has not been on line here for a few months. He's a great guy and has helped many of us; we're hoping he is okay.

In the meantime, I'm sure others can answer your question. I have a '68 and have had mine apart, but it's been a couple of years. If I remember correctly, it was exactly as shown in the diagram - fits between the two parts and is tightened as you 'screw them together'. Others may have a more recent memory. Best, Paul

My wiring harness for the ground wire is not a ring...it' s a spade connector which is why I'm confused. I have a call into Lectric Limited on this now as when I saw this picture and the fact I was scratching my head on where the ground wire goes being this is different from the picture vs. what's on my wiring harness.

Truthfully I don't remember this ground ring on the cigarette housing when I pulled it apart early Spring either.

You just reminded me - it's a spade that comes off the 'retainer'. Funny how your comment jogged my memory. If you don't see your post off the retainer, you might look for 'where it was before it broke off'. At least that's the memory I have now. I'll go take my meds.
