Stumped!!! Won’t stay running...Help?!?!?
When I got my 77 it ran fine and needed TLC and maintenance. Now it won’t run! It starts and idles fine then after a few minutes it just shuts itself off like you turned the key off. Starts right back up. Driving down the road it will just shut it self off again and you can push clutch in start it back up and it goes for a 1/2 mile or so and does it again. So far we have checked fuel pump and working fine, changed fuel filters and new Carb so it is not a fuel problem. Checked all vacuum lines. Replaced coil and put in complete new distributor. Made sure it was timed right. New plugs and wires. Leaning towards ....ignition switch now but not really wanting to tear column apart if don’t have to....looking for ideas! Wanna drive my car and flustered with it right now. Please and thank you for any thoughts 😀
Fuel issues don't usually cause a motor to shut off like someone turned the key off from my experience , with fuel problems you usually get a stumble before it dies or a massive hesitation when you hit the gas pedal .
if it only cuts out while driving if it were me I would hook up a 12v light to the 12v wire on the distributor run it up by the wipers and go for a drive and watch the light when it cuts out to see it it goes out at the same time it stalls, or another thing let the car idle and get your hand under the dash on the column and wiggle the ignition switch harness see if it stalls. It could be bad ignition switch or connector , possibly the tach lead shorting to ground.
