Been thinking about a mini-starter & got to looking at what's available, & boy am I confused. From what I gather from the archives, I need a 168 tooth flexplate starter for my BB. Does that sound right?
I've read conflicting stuff in the manufacturer's literature about "permanent magnet" type starters vs. "gear reduction" type starters--the permanent magnet guys claim more torque and no gears to bugger themselves up. Whatchall think?
Also lots of claims about anything from 50% more torque to %150 more torque than stock (from 2HP to 3.5HP)--would you go for the most torque or go for the cheaper ones? How much torque is plenty of torque for a starter?
I'm also concerned about bolts & wiring--I read something in an earlier thread about the bolts that come with the starters being threaded metric & seeming to fit but allowing the starter to move--any experiences with this? Also read something about how older cars like mine need an extra terminal that some of these starters don't have. Anybody got details on that?
Don't think you can beat these AC Delco mini race starters for the money.
Not gear reduction but enough torque to rotate the earth  http://www.4alterstart.com/
Still hoping someone can fill me in about the difference between the permanent magnet type of mini starter and the gear reduction. Also about whether it's worth the extra bucks to go from the 2HP ones to the 3.5HP ones.
