I had to think about this cause I had a new L82 1980 and it did not have a lockup converter , here's the answer some do some dont.
The NCRS manual appendix I have lists (3) automatic trannys for 1980 (page 126):
MV4 = THM 350C
MX1 = Automatic Transmission
M33 = THM 350 (for California)

if you had a lock up, it was not working .if all the computer parts were disconnected,then it was not getting any info.I have changed these over on 81s and they did not have the lock up.You can look to see if you have any wires going to the tranny..If you do find lock up wires ,you cant use them for the 700r4

Note the OP said it was a 305. 1980 California only 305CI with the ECM, Computer Controlled Carb and Turbo350 with the lockup converter -- all the same as the 1981 with a 350CI engine a year later. An obscure little corvette trivia question.
