I'm building my 85 350 sbc. its being machined .030 over. I bought a Speedmaster kit threw Jegs. I didn't realize until now it isn't a balanced kit. what essentially mean? will my harmonic balancer not work? is there more that ill need to do? or does it just mean because its not assembled yet so there for its not balanced???
This is my first time actually building a big engine, any knowledge in very helpful, thank you!
I bought the White Bros. kit a few years back, which was balanced and shipped with the verifying data. I'm not sure exactly how they do it, but perhaps you may still get this step done locally.
All I know, is that when I fired it up the first time, I was blown away, because all that was present was noise and NO vibration at all! It was quite and experience.
I wouldn't know why your HB wouldn't work, other than if it's old, it may have lost it's timing mark index like mine did. You'd want to install a new/better HB for your 383 anyway.

Depending on the kit you bought 383's come in two varieties. One is internally balanced like a 350 would be. This one would allow you to swap over your balancer and flywheel/flexplate without issue. The other type is externally balanced, and those require special weighted balancers and flywheels. As for balancing the rotating assembly any competant machine shop can handle that job for a few hundred dollars.
