I am having one heck of a time lining up the end of the steering column to the rag joint spline. I have tried with the rag joint on the steering column, and on the steering gear to no avail. there is not sufficient clearance between the fire wall opening and the spline to allow the backdrive arm to clear allowing more movement it seems. Anyone out there have any advice for a very frustrated Buddy?

Re: steering column install (runamuck)
I just installed my new rag joint about 2 weeks ago, but I had my steering gearbox out of the car. This makes it a whole lot easier. Try loosening the 3 bolts that hold the steering gearbox and see if this will give the needed room for you. You may even try taking a couple of these bolts out.
I'm not sure that I understand your problem. Does it seem as if the steering column shaft is too long? This would force the entire steering column back up into the car.
The length from the lower column bearing to the very end of the exposed steering shaft should be 4.5 inches. If it is longer than 4.5 inches push on the steering shaft until it moves back inside the column to attain the 4.5 inch dimension.
Thanks Eddie96
Our ride is a 72 BB 4speed convertible not much room to work given headders etc. I'll try loosening sterring gear attaching bolts as you suggest and hopfully be able to line up and finish this task without loosing it!!
Thanks again
I'll let you know how we make out
