Just got my new MSD distributor, ignition box, coil, and wires. They all look very nice and can't wait to install it. Where is the best place to mount the box so I don't have to splice an wires?
I can hook the wire up to the battery for the 12V. Where can I hook up the 12V wire for when the ignition is turned on? Do I need to feed the wire through the firewall and splice it into the ignition or is there a place in the engine compartment that has a wire that turns on and off with the ignition? I'm don't know much about electrical stuff but I want to hook it up myself.
If I remember correctly, you should have 3 terminals on your starter; one larger one with constant 12 volts from the battery and 2 smaller ones that have an S (start) and an R (run) on them. You want to use the smaller one with R on it for your 'ignition on' connection.
i mounted my box where my over flow tank was on the fender well,i got my constant 12v power from the starter solenoid and ignition 12v from the original 12v wire that went into the factory distributor and grounded the box ant the starter mounting bolt.
Thanks. I am going to use the original wire from the coil. I am planning on running the 12V Constant straight to the battery. I think I can feed it through the firewall and then under the carpet and panels back to the battery.
I have the distributor in and am going to mount the box on the fender well just beside the overflow tank. You can see it a little if you look hard through the "shark" vent but it fits in there really well.
I have my battery connection mounted to the starter at the big wire from the battery. This prevents you from running it all the way back to the battery.
Thanks Godonm. Found the bolts to the starter and will hook them up tomorrow morning.
Should have it all hooked up tomorrow and then off to the exhaust shop to have my headers put on. (I'll make sure to disconnect the + and - before any welding)
