Looking at my alternator it seems too far back compared to motor.
Got this motor in pieces. Wondering if there should be spacers behind the bracket that
bolts to the head ( like 1/2 inch?)
Any help appreciated.
Picture not great.
Thanks,
Steve
I had the same issue because of aftermarket heads. I don't believe the whole ALT has to come forward, just the waterpump side or where the bracket is. I used a thick washer under each bracket bolt to align the ALT better. But a fabricated shim / spacer out of 1/8" stock with proper holes drilled would be better than washers.
If you can see a empty inner pulley, your eyes are better than mine. But that theory makes sense.
It looks to me like there IS something there.
Blurry pic.
I think the AC is on the wrong pulley also.
78s had a 2 groove pulley with a single groove pulley added in front for the AIR pump. Don't know if this particular L48 had AIR, most didn't.
Some think there is a direct belt from damper pulley to wp pulley but only without AC.
Thanks for all the input.
( sorry about picture)
The belts are on the correct pulleys.
Used the straight edge about 5/8 off,
soo I put 3 3/8 flat washers under mounts that bolts on the
head. Straighter now.
Seems it would wear alternator bearing and belt
if left the way it was.
Thanks again fort the help.
Steve
If you have the stock GM heads and are using the stock cast iron bracket, then you should not have to shim out the bracket. Off by 5/8" is not acceptable. Somethings not right. Like KapsSa said, what is on the third pulley? (closest to the W.P.)
Just throwing this out there.....
Correct water pump?
Is there any space between the back cover on the water pump and the timing chain cover on the motor? Shouldn't be.
That I think was wrong alternator (came with car)
I think I have the correct one now.
I will take a better (hopefully ) picture tomorrow
and post it. will show belt positions etc.
This was a pace car with a/c, and power steering pump,
but no smog pump.
This is a new H/D water pump ( ordered for year)
looks right, but will look for space behind tomorrow.
Would like to solve this correctly.
Thanks to all,
Steve
Here are pics I took today.
Alternator belt is closest to engine.
a/c compressor is next, and power steering is last.
There is no space behind the water pump ( close to timing chain cover).
I saced alternator closer to straight line, but probably still 1/4 inch off.
Would like to find correct solution. May look for another c3 to look at locally.
Thanks for all the help,
Steve
It's likely the wrong short WP for the C3 accessory brackets. Had a similar problem with Dad's car but the alternator belt also hit the PS pump when on the back pulleys. We just made a spacer for the alternator and ran the belt on the front pulleys since he doesn't have the AC compressor and didn't really care if it was correct or not.
Do the pump and crank pulleys line up properly?
Do you not have a camera that can take clear pictures?

Heads Up,
That is a pace car motor in a 1959 El Camino.
Sadly the birdcage on the pace car was not so good.
So I sold the roller, but since I already built the motor I decided to use it in this project.
Half finished.
Thanks,
Steve
