I want to have this done on my '69 'vert and I have a very competent shop that is willing. My question is weather I should take off some of the trim and if so, how difficult is it? This is a new one for me, as I am only familiar with the more conventional steel body hardtops that only have small strips that clip on. The top chrome/stainless piece is screwed on, and I would bet these are frozen. Any tips? It doesn't have any apparent rust, inside or out...
I should have been more specific. It is a windshield shop that is doing the
work. Did you watch the process? I'm thinking I can save a couple bucks
and I'll also know that nothing will get damaged, or at least I'll only have
myself to blame! :D
I wouldn't think you would save that much if you took off the moulding yourself - besides, if they don't do 'vettes often, then if they take the stuff off, they will know where/how everything went. Also, if YOU aren't familiar with it, you can do some damage - especially the top reveal which can be a real pita to get off without bending or breaking it or the retaining tabs. And by the way, the top reveal should not be screwed on (unless it is an incorrect one) - the clips the tabs go into are screwed on.
Hans, I doubt you'd save $10.00 doing it yourself, plus if you break it while trying to install it, it is yours! I have seen them break during installation, it can happen. I used to rebuild wrecked rice burners (back in the mid 70's) I'd call the windshield shop and they would come over to the shop and install a new windshield cheaper than I could buy them.
Plus some of the shops will do free window ding repair on windshields they install.
