My small blast cabinet doesn't fit anything big so I sent out a bunch of parts to a sand blaster and I just got them back. Putting some paint on the lower control arms and bushing cross shafts. I just noticed that there are two different shafts for the lower control arms. One is smooth and one has a groove down the middle. Which one is correct for 1975?
From Alan71 Hi,
I believe the 'flat' shaft and the 'I beam' shaft were used interchangeably.
They were both used in Production, and for Service.
The 'I beam' configuration appears to be seen more on mid-year cars than later cars.
Original cars have been seen with one of each configuration.
Regards,
Alan
I've had these apart and have been working on painting parts and I can't believe I never noticed that they were different until today. I'm not surprised as a lot has been wrong with the car so far. I also found one of the front calipers I rebuilt had part numbers on one of the halves from the 60's. I may use them as they are or look for a matching arm to make them both the same.
my 77 had one of each type of bottom arm. the main thing is to ensure they aren't bent or worn excessively where the "knurled" or serrated end of the steel sleeve bites in .
I'll need to check the ends with a straight edge to verify that they are all good. I looked up the part number on the odd shaft 3738505 and it comes up as a 63-67 year part. Always intrigues me how things ended up on the car. I am assuming that someone did some work on the front suspension at some point in the cars life and ended up changing this part but as the other's have said their cars seem to have been like that since new.
