Searching through all the vendors, I see that I can get the 7 leaf rear spring liners for the 63 - 77 models but not the 9 leaf spring liners for the 78-79 which are also a bit wider. Is there another source out there (even generic will do) for these liners? I have the spring out since I am rebuilding the rear end and decided to refresh it for now (clean, blast, paint and replace the liners).
The problem is the shape of the liners in section....Most after market spring liner is shaped like a "C" while the liners on a Corvette are capital "I" shaped. I would think if the correct width can be found the "c" shape should be fine.
I had a leaf added to my 9 leaf. the spring shop removed all the smashed and worn out pads. They are not required. they were supposed to make the spring quieter and more compliant. They probably do for a couple of years, but not necessary at all
Ok, so I took the springs apart to see what was between them - it looks like some bubba took some snips and cut galvanized sheet metal and stuck them between the leafs. Is this right? Is the material between the leafs supposed to be metal? Metal thickness was 0.017"
After sitting on this project for a while, I finally completed the refurbishment of the rear springs:
The smaller leafs I sandblasted in my cabinet. The larger ones I sandblasted them using a pressurized sandblaster I coated all leaf springs with Ospho to stop any remaining rust and let it dry about 48 hours Since I do not have a way to powder coat, I went with 3 coats of primer.... ... and three coats of black, engine enamel paint The old liners I went to my local metal purveyor and purchased a 24 gauge galvanized sheet. The minimum I could purchase was 12' x 4'. It was not that expensive plus I could use the rest for some other projects Carefully measured and cut strips Put everything back together!
