Melting Slicks
Did it have any tight turns or kinks in the cable? Was it run up against or too close to the exhaust? Did you lube the new cable? It's things like this that will cause a cable to fail.

or gummed up speed-O, to test dissconnect at transmission.
manually spin the cable with your fingers, it should turn very freely,
and you should be able to spin up 20 mph or so with just flickin your cable with your fingers, and see it on the speedo.
