So I have a 78 corvette with the r4 style compressor and I just got done doing a bunch of work to the ac system. right after we charged the system for the first time the compressor started making a pretty loud clicking noise we decided to get a new compressor to see if that one was bad but no such luck. the noise only happens with the ac on as soon as it is turned off it stops and the ac does work. we have replaced everything but the pressure switch and the evaporator; everything else is new, the hard lines, hoses, accumulator, condenser all of it. I've done a little research and found some possibilities like the compressor wearing out because of using 134a but I was told to check for play in and out on the compressor and I cant feel any. anyone had any similar problems?

Sounds like a pressure switch issue / adjustment to me. R-134A has different operating pressures than the good old R-12. There are adjustable pressure switches available from various A/C retrofit vendors, and the Corvette supporting vendors on this site.
Hope this is of some help. Done right, R-134 can be an effective alternative to R-12 and do a good job.
