Default fuel pump ?

My carb is always way dry the fuel drains out having to turn it over a bit to get it to start
i have a see trough fuel filter and it is always empty

my fuel pump is stock with return line on it
is the return needed

I'm assuming this is a Quadrajet carb? I believe the return line is required by the stock pump. That's not your problem.

My wife's 79 does this. It's not worth fixing right now. I made sure there was a proper check-valve fuel filter installed in the Q-Jet, and that helped a bit. Replacing the distributor and fixing the timing also helped a lot.

no i have a holly carb will try fuel filter with check valve

I know nothing about Holley carbs. The Q-Jet holds the filter inside it, so the check valve is within the body of the carb at the fuel inlet. But as long as the filter is after the fuel pump, it's worth a shot. Just make sure there isn't any rubber hose between the fuel pump and the carb.
