Got 2/3rds of the initial work done yesterday. Got the motor mounts removed, bough tank a couple of chains to attach to the block with 4 head bolts this morning. I have jack stands under the front, jack and a board under the transmission, chain ready to go, passenger side wheel off.

Putting the kids to sleep for a nap and then hooking up the hoist and pulling it.

Adam, two suggestions. Get the devise to crank an control the angle. I pulled mine without it but had one to put it back inn. Makes it a lot easier. I think you can rent them from o riellys AutoZone etc.

if you motor stand is a tripod DO NOT TRY TO MOVE IT. The tripod is not stable and can tip. I guess if you do have to move it keep the gantry attached.

Success! Leaving the power steering pump in was not my best idea ever but everything is out now.

I am not clear how the engine stand connects to the engine, though. I thought I’d reuse the trans bell housing bolts and connect it to the block there but the bolts are not in the universe of being long enough.

You will need longer bolts to attach the engine stand mounting plate to the engine block. Remove the flexplate while engine is on the hoist and then attach the engine stand head to the engine block then use the hoist to lower engine until it is low enough to guide mounting plate onto the engine stand. Im sure you already know this.

I removed all the flexplate bolts by puttin a wrench on them and smacking them hard with a rubber mallet but the flex plate won’t come off; not even with a my pry bar... do I need a puller??!?

A puller is not needed. You could try placing a square piece of 2x4 wood on the flexplate and use a heavy hammer and strike the flexplate hard enough to loosen it from the crankshaft.

somebody probably over did Loctite on the flex plate bolts. I've used a big bar before. The fortunate part is that they are cheap

I used a 3ft long breaker bar with a 1 1/1 - 2 feet of jack handle on top of that and just kept prying all the way around; flexplate is all warped now but off.

Got the 2 1/2” long 3/8” bolts and got the engine on the stand!

Thanks all; mission accomplished!

Someone asked for pictures; I only took one. (I was on a time crunch to get the borrowed hoist back to its owner.)

And if anyone in the future finds this thread and is wondering about what bolts to use to connect the harbor freight engine stand to an SBC: 3/8”, course thread (16), 2 1/2” long with a 3/8” washer - grade 8 bolts to be safe.
